Lawmakers in New York Are Planning to Introduce a Bill That Would Grant Gig Workers Workers’ Compensation Benefits

According to Bloomberg BNA, “Some federal lawmakers want to make it easier for on-demand workers to get health insurance, retirement and other portable benefits, mirroring efforts already going on in some states.” And “companies such as ride-share giants Uber and Lyft, has lawmakers questioning workplace protections.”

Although gig workers are independent contractors, there are many risks that come with being say an Uber or Lyft driver including (but not limited to): safety concerns (i.e., being attacked by passengers and car accidents), and with no workers’ compensation or liability there’s financial risks.
